29/06/2019 Visit of the botanical garden in Bonn.

On Friday, 29. June 2018, the Humboldtianer of the regional group Cologne/Bonn met for a visit at the Botanical Gardens in Bonn. We started with a seminar by Prof. emeritus Dr. Wilhelm Bartlott, University of Bonn, at the Lecture Hall of the Zoological Institute, Poppelsdorf Castle, at 5:00 pm. The title of his presentation was "The Secret of Sacred Lotus: Diversity of Biological Surfaces for Technical Innovation". Prof. Bartlott is well known for his contribution to the research on plant surfaces and its relevance for technical applications. He coined the term "Lotus effect" which describes the self-cleaning capacity of the leaf surface of the Sacred Lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera) surfaces. The extreme water repellent (superhydrophobicity) effect of some plant surfaces offer large potential for technical applications. The presentation focused on the surfaces of Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) and Salvinia. Salvinia is a water fern that establishes superhydrophobic leaf surfaces which maintain an air layer under water. This strategy of biomimetic air retaining surfaces offers a great potential for producing energy-saving ship hulls, for sensory functions or oil absorption materials. After the seminar, a guided tour (in English) through the Botanical Gardens of the University of Bonn was offered by Dr. Cornelia Löhne (Kustodin). The Botanical Gardens of the University of Bonn have recently been refurbished and offer an excellent overview over plant systematics across the world, including local, tropical and subtropical plants in glass houses and outside gardens. The garden also holds a specific collection of plants producing superhydrophobic surfaces including Lotus and Salvinia.

At 7:00 pm we gathered at the Meyer's Restaurant in Bonn for dinner. Sitting outside in the backyard with just perfect weather, the evening ended with very interesting discussion on scientific and related topics.
